A first attempt at an acoustic prog-rock adaptation of a Rob Shearman short story. This song about a little boy who betrays his father to the mercies of Santa Claus is based on ‘Cold Snap’ from his book ‘Everyone’s Just So So Special’. Lyrics:

Christmas time is here again
It’ll be the best one yet
Or so my daddy promises
To help me to forget

Come Christmas morning Santa’s here
Though something’s not quite right
I feed him up but he wants more
Before he takes flight

All I want’s my family back
Though I guess a bike is fine
Santa says “it can be all yours”
“All you need do is sign”

The colour drains from daddy’s face
Tears flow like a floods tide
Payment’s due for his own gift
Santa Claus leads us outside

Walk for miles through the winter snow
Never ending as the cold winds blow
Walk for miles through the winter snow
Tread in foot steps watch the forrest grow

When I woke up the next day
It seemed I had been wrong
But though I found him still in bed
Some part of him had gone

A disconnect so tangible
Grew stronger every year
A pattern laid for my own life
The festive cheer can’t be found here

So as the snow falls hits the ground
White Christmas once again
I leave it all and head outside
Walking through bright white plain

The look I see in Santas eyes
Makes his wishes clear
Pale and frail awaiting death
I send him home but leave the deer

Walk for miles through the winter snow
Never ending as the cold winds blow
Walk for miles through the winter snow
Tread in foot steps watch the forrest grow
(Winter snow, cold winds blow, forrest grows)
(When the cold snap hits at christmas that is when you’ll start to fear)
(When the cold snap hits at christmas come and join the other deer)

Well I look in those eyes that I once left behind
And I hope that it’s you and not just in my mind
‘Cause I know I’ve done wrong but I’m here to do right
And that’s why I am here on this cold winter night
‘Cause I once was too young to ever understand
That although we mean well things don’t all go to plan
And although we made do when our life rearranges
Sometimes everything changes
Everything changes
